Ask most tree surgery websites what a job costs and you get the same answer: every tree is different; contact us for a quote. Which is true, and completely useless if what you actually want to know is whether you are about to spend three hundred pounds or three thousand.

So here are real figures. Not a single number pretending to be precise, because that would be dishonest, but the ranges we genuinely quote across Surrey, and an explanation of what pushes a job to the top or bottom of each one.

Tree surgery prices in Surrey at a glance

Job Typical Surrey price
Small tree removal (up to around 20ft) £180
Medium tree removal (20ft to 40ft) £350-600
Large tree removal (40ft+, close to buildings) £700 plus depending on variables
Stump grinding, single stump £250
Stump grinding, large or multiple £500 plus
Crown reduction £500 depending on size
Tree pruning / thinning £350 depending on size
Hedge cutting £580 plus per day depending on variables
Two-person day rate £680
Emergency call-out call out fee £250 , £200 an hour thereafter

Those are the brackets. The rest of this page explains why the same-looking tree can sit at either end of them, so you can work out roughly where yours lands before anyone comes out.

Tree felling and removal costs

Removal is the job people most often underestimate, because the price has very little to do with the tree itself and almost everything to do with what surrounds it.

A tree standing alone in an open garden, with a clear drop zone and vehicle access to the gate, can be felled in a single cut and cleared quickly. That is the bottom of the range.

The identical tree standing three metres from a conservatory, with a neighbour’s greenhouse behind it and a two-foot side passage as the only way out, is a different job entirely. It has to be climbed and dismantled in sections, each piece lowered on ropes rather than dropped, and every scrap of it carried by hand down that passage. Same tree, same species, same height. Often three or four times the price.

That is the single most useful thing to understand about pricing for tree work. You are not paying for the tree. You are paying for the space around it.

Stump removal and grinding costs

Felling a tree leaves a stump, and removing it is a separate job with separate kit.

Grinding is priced mainly on the diameter of the stump and how deep you need to go. A stump being ground for a new lawn needs less depth than one where you intend to plant another tree or lay a patio, and that changes both the time and the price.

The variables that move it: access again, because a stump grinder has to physically reach the stump, and it does not fit through every gate. Whether the stump is in soil or set into paving or concrete. Root spread, which on a mature specimen can be considerably wider than the stump suggests. And whether there is anything buried nearby, because striking a cable or a drain turns a straightforward job into an expensive one.

See tree stump removal for how the process works.

Crown reduction costs

A crown reduction is not the same as topping, and if anyone quotes you cheaply to just take the top off, that is what you are being sold. Topping ruins a tree, produces weak regrowth, and creates a bigger problem in five years.

A proper reduction takes a percentage off the crown while keeping the tree’s natural shape, cutting back to appropriate growth points, in line with BS 3998. It takes longer, it requires someone who knows where to cut, and it costs more than topping for exactly that reason.

Price depends on the size of the crown, the percentage coming off, the species, and how much material needs to be removed and chipped. Reductions on mature oak and beech, which Surrey has in abundance, sit at the higher end.

Pruning and general maintenance costs

Lighter work, such as crown lifting, deadwooding, thinning, or clearing branches off a roof, is usually a half-day or day-rate job rather than a per-tree price.

If you have several trees needing attention, doing them in one visit is significantly cheaper than three separate call-outs, because a large share of the cost of any job is simply getting a team, a chipper and a truck to your address. Bundling work is the easiest way to reduce your spending.

See tree pruning and tree maintenance.

Hedge cutting costs

Hedges are usually priced by length and height, or as a day rate for larger runs.

The things that push the price up are height, since anything requiring a platform or ladder work costs more than what can be reached from the ground; the species, as a mature conifer hedge produces an enormous volume of waste compared to a beech hedge of the same size; and whether you want the arisings taken away or left. Disposal is a real cost and it is where cheap quotes often hide.

Emergency tree removal costs

Storm work is priced differently, and it should be.

An emergency call-out means a team is being pulled off scheduled work, often at short notice, sometimes out of hours, and frequently in bad conditions on a tree that has already failed unpredictably. A wind-thrown tree under tension is one of the most dangerous things in this trade. It costs more because it is a harder and more hazardous job, not because anyone is taking advantage of the situation.

If a tree is on a house, blocking a road or resting on power lines, price should not be your first phone call. Make the area safe and ring us.

What actually determines your price

Six things, in roughly the order they matter:

Access. Can a vehicle and chipper get close? If everything has to be carried out by hand through a side gate, the labour multiplies. This is the biggest single factor and it is the one homeowners never think about.

Proximity to buildings and boundaries. A free drop is fast. Sectional dismantling with ropes and rigging is slow and skilled.

Height and spread. Not just how tall, but how much material is coming down and how much of it needs to be chipped and hauled.

Species and condition. Dense hardwood takes longer to cut than softwood. A diseased or brittle tree, ash dieback being the common one now, may be unsafe to climb at all, which means a platform or crane and a much higher price.

Disposal. Green waste has to go somewhere and tipping costs money. Any quote that seems remarkably cheap is worth checking on this point specifically.

Legal consents. Which brings us to the part that is more or less unique to this county.

Why tree work in Surrey costs more than the national average

If you have read a UK price guide and our quote came in higher, this is why. It is not a Surrey premium for its own sake.

Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas are everywhere here. Guildford, Farnham, Godalming, Dorking and Reigate are dense with them. If your tree is protected, you need written consent before work starts, and in a conservation area you must give the council six weeks’ notice. That is administration, delay, and a real cost that a job in an unprotected area simply does not carry.

Surrey gardens are full of large, mature trees close to houses. Victorian and Edwardian plots with hundred-year-old oaks and beeches ten metres from a roofline. That is rigging work, not felling work.

Access is genuinely bad in much of the county. Narrow lanes, long gravel drives, no crane position, no room for a truck.

Disposal costs more near London. Tipping and green waste charges are higher than they are further out, and that’s reflected in every quote.

Clay soil. Much of Surrey sits on shrinkable clay, which is why crown reductions near buildings are more common here, and why species and proximity decisions need more care than elsewhere.

How to read a tree surgery quote

Whoever you use, including us, a written quote should tell you:

  • Exactly what work is being done, described properly, not as “tidy up the big one at the back”
  • Whether arisings are removed or left, and whether logs are chipped or stacked
  • Whether stump grinding is included or separate, since it usually is separate
  • Who handles TPO or conservation area consent
  • Public liability insurance level, and current certification
  • Whether the price includes VAT

If a quote is verbal, vague, or notably cheaper than everything else, one of those is missing. Usually disposal or insurance.

Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest job

Tree work at height is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. When someone quotes half of what everyone else does, that gap comes from one of three places: no proper insurance, no certification, or waste left in your garden for you to deal with.

If an uninsured contractor drops a limb through your roof, or through your neighbour’s, that becomes your problem. We carry £10m in public liability cover, our team is NPTC-qualified, and we work to BS 3998. That is not a sales line; it is the reason the numbers above are what they are.

Areas we cover

We work across Surrey, including Guildford, Cobham, Dorking, Reigate and Epsom, and the surrounding villages.

Get an accurate price

The ranges on this page will give you a ballpark figure. They will not get you to a number because until someone has looked at the access, the drop zone, and the tree itself, no one honest can give you one.

Mark will come out, look at the job, and give you a written quote with everything itemised. No obligation, no pressure.
